Latest guides

Practical walkthroughs with the math shown, not just conclusions.

EV Charging Costs by State

Home and public charging cost estimates for popular EV models in every state, using EIA residential electricity rates.

Solar Payback by State

Estimated solar payback periods by state with system cost, production, utility rates, and incentive assumptions.

How these numbers are produced

Every calculator on WattWise is deterministic: the same inputs always produce the same output, and the formula is documented in plain language on the tool page. Where a figure depends on an external benchmark — a published rate, a statutory limit, or an industry cost range — the page cites the publisher and links to it.

We separate inputs you control (balances, rates, dimensions, weights) from assumptions we supply (default rates, waste factors, contingency percentages). Assumption defaults are deliberately conservative and every one of them is editable on the tool page, so you can substitute your own quote or local figure.

Nothing you type is transmitted. The calculations execute in JavaScript in your browser, which means the tools work offline and no personal data is collected.

Frequently asked questions

Are the WattWise calculators free to use?
Yes. Every calculator and guide on the site is free, runs in your browser, and requires no account. The site is supported by advertising.
How accurate are the results?
Each tool documents the formula it uses, the assumptions behind it, and the public data sources it references. Results are planning estimates, not professional advice, and they can differ from quotes or figures you receive from a provider.
Do you store the numbers I enter?
No. Calculations run locally in your browser. We do not transmit or store the values you type into the calculators.
How does WattWise keep its content up to date?
Guides list a publication date and a last-updated date. Pages that rely on published data cite the source and the period the data covers so you can judge how current it is.
